Mike Stilkey creates illustrations with a difference. The LA based artist takes books that would otherwise be discarded and with the help of ink, acrylic and pencil, paints beautiful pieces of art. Books are strategically stacked to form a canvas for Mike’s enchanting work. The fantastical visual narratives suggest an interaction at play between the characters and stories in the books beneath. I love it, and I’m not alone.
Mike has exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the US and internationally to much acclaim.
He says: “I think part of the appeal is that I reuse books that have been discarded or that are going to be destroyed so I can give them a second life in my art.”
