Last Thursday lunchtime there was a once-off food market in the County Hall here in Wexford. I read about it in an email that promised lots of locally produced, delectable goodies. That was enough to tear Z and myself away from our computer screens to go check it out. Judging from the very enticing smell and the eagar crowd bustling among the stalls outside the county council building I knew we wouldn’t be disappointed.
For lunch on the run there was lots on offer, both savory and sweet. First off, I had a hot dog with a distinctly maritime flavour- a fish sausage in a roll. No, you read that correctly- I did say fish. The innovative seafood sausage is the brainchild of Wexford company Atlantis Seafood under the brand-name Kilmore Quay. A delicious blend of haddock and salmon, the sausages contain no nasty preservatives or additives, but oodles of healthy Omega 3. I’ll definitely be putting these on my shopping list.
Among the stalls in the County Hall I was immediately attracted to the Wild About stall. Producers Fiona and Malcolm Falconer source most of their ingredients locally- on their own doorstep in fact. What isn’t foraged from their hedgerow is grown in their garden on their smallholding in Monamolin, Co. Wexford. From their extensive range of dressings, jams, syrups and chutneys, I eventually settled on a pear and ginger conserve. A dollop went on my fish-hot-dog making it disappear even quicker.
To finish, we had a Nutella crepe artfully put together by Mr. Mullins of Zanna Cookhouse. The company, based in Carne, Co.Wexford, offers a wide range of tempting soups, quiches and cakes. And so, with Nutella smudged smiles, we reluctantly went back to our computer screens. I could see this catching on.
